Abstract

El modo en que los seres humanos nos disponemos y organizamos en el entorno define lo que en arqueología conocemos como patrón de asentamiento. En el centro de lo que fue la laguna de Magdalena en la región Valles de Jalisco se eleva Atitlán, isla que resguarda la evidencia de actividades sociales que, por más de 1000 años de ocupación, se relacionaron con el agua y el aprovechamiento de minerales. Dentro de las evidencias arqueológicas vistas a nivel de superficie salta a nuestro interés una acumulación de objetos de obsidiana dentro de un área de 56,400 m2. La pareja Weigand la definieron como un taller, sin embargo nuestros análisis evidencian que se trata de un espacio de producción de objetos de dicho material, cuyo fin último era emplearlos dentro de otro proceso de producción artesanal relacionado seguramente con el medio lacustre, el cual se realizó dentro del área marcada por la acumulación.
