Agouti (Dasyprocta sp.) (Mammalia, Rodentia) predatory behavior in capitivity: considerations about reintroduction.

Abstract

Eight agoutis were kept in a 10 by 12 menclosure, in Santo Antônio ranch, Campinas, SP.In the same enclosure adult domestic fowl and fivechicks of Gallus gallus var. domestica were kept.Predation of eight adult chickens and one Numida meleagriswere observed. Chicks were also usedfor experimental purposes and were predated.I observed agoutis eating chicken and goose eggs.It can be concluded that agoutis exert a heavypredation pressure on ground nesting birds, factor to beconsidered when planning repopulation envisagingforest regeneration. Agouti seed dispersal shouldbe considered, as their predatory habits.
