Abstract

Introducción: el cáncer de esófago es uno de los tumores más agresivos con una supervivencia global inferior al 20 % a los cinco años. Su incidencia está en aumento en los últimos años, a expensas fundamentalmente de aquellos que se localizan en la unión gastroesofágica, por su asociación con la metaplasia de Barrett. Desarrollo: si bien el carcinoma epidermoide de esófago está claramente asociado al tabaquismo y alcoholismo, la asociación con el virus del papiloma humano es aún controversial. El primer reporte sobre la asociación del virus y carcinoma epidermoide la hizo Syrjanen en 1988. Es un virus ADN epitelio trópico, cuyo ciclo de vida está inseparablemente ligado al proceso de diferenciación del epitelio pluriestratificado de la piel y membranas mucosas. Se reporta positividad en 22,9 % de los 11 485 casos de carcinomas escamocelulares analizados por hibridación in situ y en 15,2 % de los 2 020 casos de carcinomas de células escamosas analizados por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa. Conclusion es: existen escasos estudios que confirmen la correlación virus del papiloma humano/cáncer de esófago, en el mundo y en Cuba, por lo que resulta un tema controversial.
