Manaus, ficções da borracha e realidades metropolitanas

Abstract

A história urbana de Manaus, capital do Amazonas, foi investigada no período compreendido entre meados dos séculos XIX e o início do século XXI. Buscou-se explorar de que maneira a cartografia e a história registradas do assentamento são compatíveis com uma interpretação morfológica. Referências, métodos e ferramentas adotados se vinculam à Teoria da Lógica Social do Espaço (Sintaxe do Espaço), baseados na cartografia disponível sobre dois recortes: a) 1844 a 1937 — Mapas 01-04; e b) 1951 a 2023 — Mapas 05-08. Resultados obtidos permitem destacar os atributos que contribuíram para a estruturação da cidade. Achados apontam que a cartografia foi usada como veículo de promoção de ideias, indicando o caráter idealizado do urbano, fato evidente nas cartas executadas até 1937. Por outro lado, nas etapas posteriores de desenvolvimento, incluída a fase metropolitana, verificou-se o insuficiente diálogo entre estrutura de circulação e crescimento populacional. O debate subsidia a leitura de que a forma urbana materializa no tempo conjunto de discursos, políticas e aspirações sociais – num constante e conflitante embate entre a cidade ficcional e a cidade real.
