Abstract

Hoy en dí­a, a pesar del extenso conocimiento sobre el ori-gen microbiano de las enfermedades e infecciones, mu-chos pacientes sucumben ante infecciones contraí­das en el hospital. Estas infecciones que ocurren por el solo hecho de haber estado en el hospital son llamadas “infecciones nosocomiales†(de la palabra griega NOSOCOMIUM que significa “hospitalâ€) o “infecciones intrahospitalarias†que el paciente no tení­a presentes ni en incubación al momento de ingresar al hospital y son contraí­das durante la instancia en él. Los puntos en los que contraen infecciones nosoco-miales con mayor frecuencia son las incisiones quirúrgicas y los tractos urinarios y respiratorio. Los microorganismos causantes de las infecciones nosocomiales provienen de la piel del paciente, de otros pacientes, del personal médico y de enfermerí­a, instrumentos contaminados, equipos mal desinfectados o del ambiente.
