Abstract

É ponto pacífico na historiografia de que as imagens circulavam nos territórios da monarquia pluricontinental portuguesa. Muito se escreveu sobre os usos e as apropriações das gravuras, todavia, poucos explicaram as razões que levaram os pintores na América portuguesa a adotar como tipos iconográficos as gravuras que circulavam no reino de Portugal e seus domínios. O presente artigo busca aprofundar a discussão sobre a circularidade dessas imagens na América portuguesa setecentista tendo como ponto de partida o acervo iconográfico da Igreja da Ordem Terceira Carmelita do Recife, Capitania de Pernambuco, com especial atenção para as obras de João de Deus e Sepúlveda
