
Se estudiaron 105 pacientes con fiebre de origen desconocido, ingresados en el Hospital "Hermanos Ameijeiras" en el período 1988-1992. Las principales causas fueron las neoplasias, sobre todo las hematológicas (linfomas), seguidas por las enfermedades infecciosas (tuberculosis y endocarditis infecciosa), las conectivopatías (artritis reumatoidea y enfermedad de Still del adulto) y las granulomatosis (hepatitis granulomatosa y enfermedad inflamatoria del instestino). Los medios diagnósticos de mayor utilidad fueron los estudios histológicos (biopsia de ganglio, hígado y médula ósea), así como los distintos métodos microbiológicos (cultivos), mientras que los estudios imagenológicos (ultrasonografía y tomografía axial computadorizada) tuvieron gran utilidad orientadora para el diagnóstico. Los fármacos antiinflamatorios no esteroideos como ayuda para el diagnóstico mostraron efectividad en las enfermedades neoplásicas y colágenas. Los esteroides fueron poco utilizados por sus múltiples efectos adversos.
