Acido araquidonico y radicales libres: su relación con el proceso inflamatorio

Abstract

Las especies reactivas del oxígeno (ERO) pueden inducir daños en diferentes tejidos al producir la peroxidación lipídica de las membranas, fenómeno implicado en la fisiopatología de muchas enfermedades. Durante los eventos hipóxicos se incrementa la producción de ERO, mecanismo en el cual juegan un papel preponderante la xantina oxidasa y las células del sistema retículo endotelial; los leucocitos polimorfonucleares posibilitan la formación de sustancias derivadas del ácido araquidónico que se involucran en el desarrollo de la lesión inflamatoria en el tejido dañado. El ácido araquidónico se libera de los fosfolípidos de membrana catalizado por la fosfolipasa A2 cuya actividad se incrementa, entre otras, durante situaciones de isquemia. Este da lugar a compuestos de gran actividad biológica que en su metabolismo generan a su vez nuevas ERO, todo lo cual nos hace concluir en la estrecha relación del ácido araquidónico con el daño celular y el proceso inflamatorio.
