Abstract

As verrugas genitais são conhecidas desde a Antiguidade. Consideradas como doença de origem venéra e associadas ao homossexualismo masculino, foram registradas em escritos médicos e despertavam interesse entre poetas eróticos e satíricos. Suas denominações mais antigas são Thymus e Ficus. O termo Thymus, logo abandonado, era encontrado em escritos médicos respeitáveis, enquanto Ficus era utilizado no sentido obsceno e sobreviveu até o século XIX nos idiomas francês, sueco, italiano e espanhol (BAFVERSTEDT, 1967). Outras denominações, em distintas épocas, foram verrugas venéras, verrugas gonocócicas e condiloma acuminado. No Brasil, as verrugas genitais são conhecidas popularmente como "crista-de-galo", "cavalo-de-crista" e ''figueira". [...]
