Abstract

L’un des débats actuels sur le développement de la sociologie visuelle porte sur le fait d’établir si elle constitue un ensemble de méthodes qui viendraient s’ajouter à la panoplie classique de l’ethnologue et du sociologue, ou si elle peut se fonder en tant que sous-discipline autonome. Quelques travaux ont déjà essayé de répondre à cette question notamment par une exploration des origines de l’utilisation de l’image en sciences sociales. Nous n’allons pas ici refaire un cheminement historique. Nous préférons questionner la sociologie visuelle dans le cadre méthodologique de l’enquête qualitative de terrain. Pour cela, nous mobiliserons des exemples de nos travaux en cours sur la "relation de service", c’est-à-dire sur ce type particulier de rapport interpersonnel qui caractériserait le travail en face-à-face dans les "métiers du public". Nous réfléchirons plus précisément à partir du travail policier, et de la rencontre entre agents de police et usagers aux guichets d’accueil des commissariats.
