Abstract

El concepto de lo nano viene siendo utilizado de manera sistemática, y a veces abusiva, en la literatura científica desde hace unos veinte años. Literalmente, el prefijo nano se refiere a la milmillonésima parte de la unidad. Si esta unidad es el metro, entonces se estaría hablando de dimensiones en el orden de 10 veces el diámetro de los átomos. Como es sabido a esta escala la explicación de los fenómenos y procesos físico químicos proviene de la mecánica cuántica. En este sentido, el cumplimiento del Principio de Incertidumbre de Heisenberg establece, por un lado, limitaciones y, por otro, nuevas oportunidades a la comprensión de los fenómenos y su aplicación en esa escala. La posibilidad de modificar las propiedades de los materiales reordenando los átomos fue enunciada por el destacado físico estadounidense R. Feynman, Premio Nobel de Física de 1965, en el ya lejano 1959. No obstante, desde el punto de vista práctico, esto no era posible en aquel momento
