Incógnitas de la arquitectura moderna en el sur de Chile

Abstract

El desarrollo de la arquitectura moderna en Latinoamérica, y en particular en Chile, plantea incógnitas que distan mucho de estar resueltas. No obstante, en medio del gran caudal de investigaciones, publicaciones y estudios sobre el tema, es posible vislumbrar nuevas miradas que contribuirían a una comprensión más amplia y profunda del fenómeno que marcó por completo el desarrollo de la arquitectura y la ciudad en el siglo XX. El presente texto indaga en un aspecto que, desde nuestra perspectiva, no ha sido suficientemente estudiado en el desarrollo de la arquitectura del siglo recién pasado en Chile: el color en la arquitectura moderna. Preguntas como: ¿Cuál es rol del color en la arquitectura moderna?, ¿Cómo se manifiesta el color en las diversas etapas del desarrollo de dicha arquitectura? no han sido aun suficientemente abordadas y menos aún respondidas. Estimamos que estas preguntas son necesarias, por cuanto advertimos, como hipótesis, que la Primera Modernidad en Chile (décadas de 1930 y 1940) es de una arquitectura fundamentalmente monocroma, y la Segunda Modernidad (décadas de 1950 y 1960), es policromática. Este fenómeno, que transformó por completo la expresión de la obra moderna, lo hemos denominado "la revolución del color".
