Abstract

Immediacy was traditionally considered one of the fundamental principles behind Romanticism. This is why this philosophical-literary movement represents the natural starting point for any analysis of such themes. The aim of this essay is to study the rebirth of immediacy as an absolute value in the modern literary world. The drive towards innovation provoked by the publishing world and the instantaneous declarations posted on line have substituted the creative originality of the Romantics. This has led to the elimination of the traditional filters that were so useful before the final publication of any work, not to mention the loss of the social role of literary critics. Today, authors can cover every role in the publishing chain, including direct contact with their readers through social media, which is particularly important given that visibility is one of the secrets of success in this market. Due to this much more banal and invasive form of communication, however, the literary world has been expanded and stretched so much as to make publication almost limitless. Naturally, although these recent changes have created risks and provoked losses, they also provide potentially useful and important opportunities and the possibility to recreate a new and modern role for the literary critic.
