Social determinants of health

Abstract

Objective: To identify the social determinants of health and prevalent symptoms in people with Post-COVID-19 syndrome. Method: Using a semi-structured questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 270 people between April and June 2022 in João Pessoa/PB, Brazil. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Women have more hair loss than men, and the elderly have less hair loss than young people. People with mental disorders reported more symptoms of hair loss, palpitations, and/or nausea. Hospital stays in intensive care are linked to more depression. Social determinants such as a sedentary lifestyle and the use of alcohol or tobacco affect concentration and hair loss. Conclusion: Psychic and physical symptoms were frequent in the study population, but the non-representative sample and the high incidence of cases limited generalization. Further studies should analyze the evolution of symptoms, include different demographic groups, and evaluate interventions.
