Abstract

En la Argentina, como en la mayoría de los países, no existen cultivares o híbridos de maíz destinados exclusivamente a la producción de forraje, sino que se utilizan con doble propósito los híbridos que se han seleccionado para producción de grano. Los maíces forrajeros se diferencian de los graníferos por el desarrollo de la parte aérea, el llenado del grano, el mantenimiento de la planta verde en el momento de corte, el porcentaje de materia seca digestible y el consumo, por parte del animal. En el presente trabajo se describe la morfología de las plantas y producción de materia seca digestible de líneas endocriadas (S^) originadas de la cruza de Zea mays L. x Zea dipioperennis I. entre sí y con respecto al híbrido comercial DK 780 y se comparan estos materiales en el rendimiento de forrajimasa por unidad de superficie (kg.ha-1): En todas las variables morfológicas y producción de materia seca digestible se encontraron diferencias entre las líneas y a excepción de la materia seca de mazorca siempre hubo líneas que superaron al testigo. Los valores hallados de digestibilidad total de la planta de las líneas fueren similares entre si y respecto al testigo lo que demuestra la importancia de la producción total de fitomasa en fenotipos forrajeros a diferencia de un maíz destinado al grano.
