Plasma rico en plaquetas: una alternativa terapéutica versátil en enfermedades oftálmicas

Abstract

Introducción: el plasma rico en plaquetas surge como una nueva estrategia de reparación celular en diversos campos de la medicina, con resultados exitosos. Al tratarse de un producto autólogo, carece de toxicidad; es biocompatible, biodegradable y apenas tiene efectos adversos. Entre su amplia aplicación, se utiliza en el tratamiento para determinadas enfermedades oftálmicas, en las que las terapias empleadas en la actualidad presentan limitaciones.Objetivos: mostrar la terapia celular como una nueva disciplina científica desde su carácter transdisciplinario, mediante una actualización de los conocimientos sobre los beneficios que ofrece la medicina regenerativa en función del tratamiento de algunas afecciones oftálmicas.Método: se realizó una revisión de la bibliografía actualizada en idioma español e inglés, a la que se pudo acceder como textos completos o resúmenes, en bases de datos como PubMed, Ebsco, Google Académico, Scielo, y se consultaron novedosos artículos en prestigiosas revistas especializadas.Conclusiones: la medicina regenerativa provee nuevas estrategias de tratamiento eficaces y seguras para pacientes con afecciones oftálmicas, tales como síndrome de ojo seco, úlceras corneales tórpidas, síndrome post-LASIK, como regenerador de la función lagrimal, en el tratamiento del glaucoma e, incluso, como bioadhesivo. Sin embargo, resulta necesario continuar realizando estudios que permitan establecer sus indicaciones en otras afecciones oculares.
