INCONTINENCIA URINARIA

Abstract

La incontinencia urinaria (IU), definida como cualquier pérdida involuntaria de orina, es una enfermedad de la edad adulta que afecta principalmente a mujeres y adultos mayores repercutiendo de manera importante en su calidad de vida. La IU es el resultado de múltiples factores de riesgo y de modificadores. Entre su clasificación se encuentran la incontinencia urinaria de esfuerzo, incontinencia urinaria de urgencia e incontinencia urinaria mixta. Para realizar el diagnóstico es necesario conocer la historia clínica y realizar una exploración física adecuada y dirigida, junto con algunas exploraciones complementarias. El tratamiento farmacológico se adecúa de acuerdo al tipo de IU que sufra el o la paciente y siendo la resolución quirúrgica la solución definitiva. Los adultos mayores tienden a no buscar atención médica por razones como el estigma y la vergüenza social, a pesar de esto, con una sociedad que envejece a mayor rapidez y con adultos mayores con una sobrevida más alta, el impacto de la IU en la sociedad y en los servicios de salud irá en aumento.
