Calidad Ambiental de la Bahía de Mariel, Cuba.

Abstract

Se reportan los resultados de los indicadores de calidad obtenidos en marzo de 2005 en una red de estaciones representativa de la bahía de Mariel, el propósito de este trabajo fue conocer los niveles de contaminación en las aguas y los sedimentos recientes de la bahía. El presente estudio ha permitido actualizar las condiciones de la calidad hidroquímica y sanitaria de las aguas de la bahía, así como determinar los niveles de contaminantes orgánicos e inorgánicos (hidrocarburos del petróleo y metales pesados) presentes en las aguas y los sedimentos recientes. Los resultados hidroquímicos y bacteriológicos revelaron que la zona cercana al poblado de Mariel exhibe el mayor compromiso en cuanto a su calidad ambiental. Esta zona es influida directamente por la introducción directa de los residuales líquidos sin tratar procedentes de fuentes terrestres municipales. No obstante esta influencia, las concentraciones de nutrientes detectadas durante este estudio no manifiestan condiciones de eutrofización en la bahía. Similar comportamiento a la del agua se observó en los sedimentos, a causa fundamentalmente de la directa introducción de los residuales líquidos sin tratar de ese poblado.
