Abstract

ABSTRACT Carbohydrate supplementation during basketball training The basketball is an intermittent physical activity that makes use of metabolic pathways whose main energy substrate is the carbohydrate (CHO). There are few studies on supplementation of CHO in this sport, especially with teenagers. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of CHO in performance during basketball training sessions. Volunteers, male basketball practitioners were divided into two groups: Group 1 (G1) aged 11-13 years (n=14) and Group 2 (G2) 14-15 years (n=11). To evaluate the physical and technical performance were used two tests to simulate game situations. CHO (1g/Kg body weight, concentration 10%) was consumed before or during training. Blood glucose was measured pre and post training, and the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) was also referred to by the volunteers on post training. The CHO intake before and during training caused increase in blood glucose in G2 (p<0.05), however, the physical and technical performance, as well as RPE did not change significantly with the consumption of CHO at both times. It was concluded that the carbohydrate supplementation during basketball training proved effective in promoting of increased blood glucose levels, but did not influence the evaluated physical and technical performance variables.
