
La cromomicosis es una infección subcutánea, poco frecuente, causada por un grupo de hongos dematiáceos1,2; se considera no contagiosa, lentamente progresiva y frecuentemente incapacitante3-5. Se describió por primera vez en Brasil, en 1911. El término cromomicosis fue propuesto por Moore y Almeida en l935, y se consideró el más apropiado, ya que no crea confusión en cuanto a la morfología1. Se presenta casi exclusivamente en los hombres, preferentemente en los trabajadores agrícolas, por lo que se plantea que la penetración de este se produce a través de heridas o traumatismos cutáneos recibidos con material contaminado con tierra, sitio donde habita de forma saprofítica esta especie1-4. Las lesiones se localizan, por lo general, en miembros inferiores, y adoptan formas y estructuras variadas: verrugosas, nodulares o psoriasiformes6,7. De manera excepcional, se puede presentar diseminación a las vísceras y a otros órganos, principalmente al cerebro5,8-10.
