The digital terrain modeling (DTM) is a mathematical model, which enables the three-dimensional representation of the behavior of a particular variable. One of the advantages of the MDT is the facility in studying a phenomenon without the need of being directly in the location chosen for the research. This work aims at the analysis of agriculture, GDP, HDI and population of South Coast of the state of Paraiba, as well as the consequences to natural ecosystems due to deforestation caused by the advance of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) plantations. This paper shows how encouraging the production of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) may be useful in the diversification of the primary sector.
