Abstract

Nota prévia ao novo Romanceiro de Almeida Garrett: Tal como conhecemos, a recolha de trechos populares, contados e cantados pela gente do povo -do "povo­ povo, o povo dos campos", como o próprio Garrett precisou -, dando origem à compilação do primeiro Romanceiro da tradição oral portuguesa, não se cumpriu na totalidade do projecto que o seu autor apresentou. Conforme a arquitectura da edição, que o autor se propunha apresentar em 1851 sob a chancela da Imprensa Nacional - e excluindo o primeiro volume que compreendeu os "romances reconstruídos", da lavra de Garrett, a partir da matéria popular -, foi apenas editado em dois volumes o livro de "romances cavalherescos antigos de aventuras". Recentemente, inéditos, foram encontrados os livros respeitantes a «lendas e profecias», pertença dos actuais herdeiros da biblioteca e espólio outrora deixado por Fernando Deslandes, ilustre bibliófilo e director da Imprensa Nacional no último quartel do século XIX.
