Clostridium difficile je anaerobni, sporulirajući patogen, sve više istraživan zbog saznanja da je glavni uzročnik nozokomijalnih infekcija, odnosno infekcija koje se razvijaju u bolničkim uvjetima. Uočeno je da su u posljednjih dvadesetak godina te infekcije sve češće, što je direktno utjecalo na pojačano istraživanje ovog patogena i na traženje načina kako spriječiti širenje bakterije, ali i kako izliječiti pacijente koji su inficirani sa C. difficile.
