Abstract

Copper nitride thin films and copper nitride intercalated with palladium and gold thin films were prepared on glass substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering under an environment of Ar and N2. A pure copper target was used to grow the copper nitride films and copper targets with incrustation of transition metal (Pd and Au) pellets were used to grow the intercalated copper nitride films. The N2 flows used to grow the thin films were 2, 4, 6 and 8 sccm. Results of structural, optical and electrical properties are presented. To obtain the chemical compositions of films, in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used. This spectroscopy shows that it is possible to obtain intrinsic copper nitride (Cu3N) and intercalated copper nitride (Cu3NPd and Cu3NAu) thin films. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the thin films have a preferential orientation in the crystallographic direction [111]. The optical properties of the thin films were obtained from transmittance spectra. The thin films present an optical energy gap of 1.08 eV, 0.57 eV and 0.47 eV for the copper nitride, intercalated copper nitride with Pd, and intercalated copper nitride with Au, respectively. All intercalated copper nitride films are conductors with a conductance as good as a heavily-doped semiconductor at room temperature; this should give them a great potential for using in the optoelectronic industry.and copper targets with incrustation of transition metal (Pd and Au) pellets were used to grow the intercalated copper nitride films.
