Machado em Quadrinhos: a adaptação de “A Cartomante”

Abstract

O presente artigo tem o objetivo de analisar a adaptação para os quadrinhos do conto “A Cartomante”, de Machado de Assis. Para isso, faremos de início uma análise do conto (publicado originalmente no jornal Gazeta de Notícias, em 1884, e posteriormente em Várias Histórias, de 1896) retomando suas características principais e mobilizando as teses sobre o conto de Ricardo Piglia, em dois ensaios do livro Formas Breves (2004). Então procuraremos identificar quais dessas características foram mantidas ou não para a versão adaptada em quadrinhos, de Flávio Pessoa e Maurício Dias (Jorge Zahar, 2008). Utilizaremos, também, a teoria de quadrinhos de Scott McCloud para discutir como os autores utilizam a linguagem dos quadrinhos para destacar elementos da história – assim como para discutir as estratégias narrativas que a arte sequencial, como entendida por Will Eisner, proporciona à adaptação. Entendemos aqui que a versão em quadrinhos deve funcionar independentemente do conto, prescindindo, portanto, da leitura da versão original. No entanto, defendemos que a leitura de ambas de forma comparativa possibilita novas formas de compreensão, enriquecendo a análise.
