
Nombre vulgar: pirá-pitá (Guaraní); salmón de río, salmón, pirapitanga, piracanjuva (Portugués). El Pira-pitá, descripto en el año 1850, es un pez que se encuentra cercanamente emparentado con el conocido Dorado (Salminus brasiliensis). Habita los ríos Paraná, Uruguay y el Río de la Plata (Liotta, 2006). Además se encuentra en Brasil y Uruguay.
