Writing jogging: short writing to teach writing?

Abstract

Writing jogging has become widespread in classroom practice, not least because of the avenues of exploitation presented on blogs consulted by teachers. Written in a short, time-limited format, it is said to reduce pupils' apprehension about writing, and offers a reassuring format for teaching writing, which is generally considered to be very time-consuming. However, the latest reports on writing production in French elementary school (IGSER 2023) highlight the dangers of this exercise becoming ritualized, running on empty, taking precedence over longer pieces of writing, and ultimately masking the complexity of writing and the diversity of operations involved. The aim of the training course is to 1. modify the representation of writing jogging 2. Reconfigure the exercise to give it a place of choice in the teaching of writing processes, by demonstrating its potential for working on the components of writing, functions, genres and types of writing.
