Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av palliativ vård : En systematisk litteraturstudie

Abstract

Background: Palliative care means that the human being is illuminated by a holistic view, where prevention and alleviation of the physical, mental, social, and existential needs must take place. In previous research, patients felt that they needed support and help from the nurses for their well-being and for them to be able to feel safe. The involvement of relatives was also important, as it helped to create support and security according to the patients. Aim: The purpose is to describe nurses' experiences of nursing in palliative care. Method: Systematic literature study with descriptive synthesis of ten qualitative articles. Results: Two themes and four sub-themes were identified. The two themes are: Nurse’s experiences in meeting patient’s and nurse’s experiences of meaningful work. The four sub-themes are: to be involved, to be in a relationship, to contribute to a dignified death and to develop as a nurse. Conclusion: The nurses experienced that nursing in palliative care was rewarding and gave satisfaction. Collaboration between the nurse, the patient and relatives were perceived to be significant, as well as how participation could result in better collaboration. However, the nurses experienced limitations in the form of emotional strain and inadequate prioritization of relieving suffering, due to lack of time and high workload.
