Abstract

The phylum placozoa is a group of primitive animals with great evolutionary and pharmacological interest. It is represented by a few genus, when Trichoplax and its representative species T. adhaerens are most studied. In this work, the knowledge of this species has been bibliographically reviewed, both from an evolutionary point of view and relative to its pharmacological interest. Experimentally, protocols have been developed for the isolation of the species in the most predictable coastal habitat for this species in the Canary Islands and for the physical identification of the specimens obtained. The results obtained indicate, on the one hand, the lack of study on this recently discovered species, as well as the potential importance of Trichoplax sp. in studies involving an ancestral animal model for the study of drugs. Including the search for biochemical targets and response mechanisms different from those described in more evolutionarily recent models. Candidate specimens have been isolated in shallow waters of Tenerife and optimal isolation conditions for this species have been established.
