Abstract

The world's population is getting older as life expectancy is lengthening in more developed societies, and it is this population that suffers from a series of negative stereotypes towards older people just because they are of a certain age. Ageism are discriminatory behaviors, clichés and negative attitudes towards our elders, often attributed to the tenderness they provoke. The attitude of overprotection or as myths so deeply rooted in our society such as: they cannot learn, they have bad memory, they are unable to do physical exercise. This has a negative influence on the daily life of the elderly, which can project an erroneous image of vulnerability and dependence. We have chosen this topic because in my 4 years as a nursing student, in my practices, both in primary care and in hospital, some forms of prejudice and negative stereotypes towards them have attracted my attention, which aroused my interest and made me learn more about the topic in depth. Our objective will be to explain the forms of ageism that our elders suffer in the health field and to analyze the perception that 4th year nursing students of the University of La Laguna (ULL) have about stereotypes and negative prejudices towards people over 65 years old.
