Abstract

Con frecuencia, cuando nos referimos al nivel de calidad de un medio de comunicación lo hacemos utilizando como elemento preferente de valoración el mayor o menor grado de cumplimiento por parte de sus profesionales de los códigos deontológicos y de las normas éticas del Periodismo. Podría decirse que un medio es tanto mejor cuanto mejor cumple las normas éticas de la profesión periodística. El interés por el respeto de tales reglas de conducta en los procesos de búsqueda, elaboración y difusión de la información se manifiesta constantemente desde muy diferentes foros e instancias (representantes institucionales, partidos políticos, académicos, asociaciones, etc.), sin olvidamos del propio público. Además, la producción de mecanismos de autorregulación por parte tanto de organizaciones profesionales como desde los mismos medios, aunque aún escasa, se ha ido incrementando paulatinamente en los últimos años. Todo ello puede llevamos a percibir que la Ética Periodística goza, efectivamente, de un prestigio reconocido. Sin embargo, el análisis de la situación real nos demuestra que su importancia efectiva es muy limitada, que sólo es aparente y que, en la práctica, los profesionales se cuestionan la viabilidad y utilidad de los códigos y documentos de autorregulación, cuando no los consideran simplemente elementos decorativos de las redacciones y bibliotecas. Entre algunas de las razones de su escepticismo está la de saber que el incumplimiento de sus normas profesionales, al contrario que en el caso de las jurídicas, no acarreará la mayoría de las veces ninguna consecuencia, excepto quizás de índole moral.
