Abstract

A comparative study of peripheral blood cell counts (RBC, platelets, leukocytes and their subpopulations, including basophils, neutrophils, eоsinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes) and basic parameters of haemostatic system was performed in several cohorts of healthy blood donors (a total of 365 subjects) from St.-Petersburg and Leningrad Region, depending on annual changes in solar activity, as well as during increased geomagnetic activity following solar fl ares. The results of this study have revealed that routine serial counts of platelets and leukocytes tend to decrease during winter time, as compared to summer season, due to redistribution of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocyte subpopulations. Winter season is also characterized by accelerated blood clotting and plasma recalcifi cation time, along with changes fi brinolytic activity, and higher factor XIII activity. On the days corresponding to high geomagnetic activity, we observed a more than 1.5-fold decrease in total leukocytes scores, due to decreased numbers of neutrophils, followed by a sharp increase within 2 days after this event. Blood coagulation time decreased on the days of elevated geomagnetic activity, whereas antitrombin III activity dropped, associated with increased activity of fi brinolysis and factor ХIII. During solar fl ares, as well as the summer we observed an increased entropy of differential blood, against background values.
