Abstract

In 2023, the Rouen library acquired a set of documents (letters and certificates) relating to an object that belonged to the niece Caroline and was sold in 1931 under the disputed title of “Flaubert's inkwell”. We are taking this opportunity to publish these archives, to put them in the context of the media dispute that accompanied them, and to try to answer the question of cultural history and heritage that they raise: could Flaubert have had only one inkwell throughout his life? We'll see that, among the objects preserved today that claim this title, some are more appropriate than others.
