Estruturas do medo

Abstract

Horror is a genre that has a long aesthetic and narrative tradition, which has lasted for over a century and which permeates the entire history of cinema. Therefore, it is also expected that the horror will have several changes in the way a narrative is constructed throughout its history, which may occur due to factors such as the social and historical influence in the context of the film's production, the cultural background of each author, as well as its geographic location. In this context, my objective through this dissertation is to find the trends in terms of narrative structures that the works of Jordan Peele, Ari Aster and Robert Eggers brought to horror cinema in the 2010s. For that, the work focus, primarily, in the search for satisfactory definitions so that the research has a solid base; first of what horror is as a cinematographic genre and then of what is a narrative structure in cinema. Then, I focus on recapitulating the history of the horror from the perspective of narrative structures. After that, I analyze the films Get Out and Us, by Jordan Peele, Hereditary and Midsommar, by Ari Aster and The Witch, and The Ligthouse, by Robert Eggers. In this second part, the dissertation seeks to highlight and delve into all the elements of narrative innovation that these films bring, how they are presented in each work, and what are the subversions of classical structures, if any. Finally, the conclusions seek to understand why such narrative innovations exist in the works of these authors and what role they play in the history of horror.
