Traditional Turkish Music - Byzantine Music During the Tanzimat Era "A Study on Theoretical Similarities"

Abstract

The period in which great changes are experienced in the Ottoman society and the “change” phenomenon has changed is the Tanzimat period. Due to the having a multicultural structure, the changes experienced during this period has a major impact on not only Turkish society but also Non-Muslim minorities that shares the same social environment with this society. For the restructuring of this cultural life that has begun to change and degenerate with the ongoing historical process, these communities have chosen the way to promote the relations with Turkish culture in some cultural areas as a way of solution. As a result of the intensification of these relations, in particularly, the borders between some cultural areas of Turkey and the Greek-Orthodox community has lost its significance. This interaction in the sense of creating the expression style and the theoretical structure has been mostly experienced in the musical field. Throughout the Tanzimat era, the links between Greek-Orthodox religious music, known as Byzantine music, and GTM Traditional Turkish Music became even more intense and were greatly influenced by GTM while the theoretical structure of Byzantine music was brought to the stage. In this research, the written sources of 19th century Byzantine music and the 19th century GTM theory were examined and the theoretical interaction between these two musical cultures was tried to be revealed with findings.
