
Los plásticos son polímeros de alto peso molecular, son cadenas repetitivas de monómeros que se conjugan para formar macromoléculas. Cuatro tipos principales de plásticos, polietileno (PE), poliester (PES), polipropileno (PP), cloruro de polivinilo (PVC) son utilizados para elaborar una gran variedad de materiales desarrollados por la industria, debido principalmente al bajo costo de producción, estabilidad ante agentes atmosféricos, resistencia y flexibilidad. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de plásticos se emplean en la fabricación de envases de un solo uso y se estima que para el 2020 se producirá un 900 % más de plásticos que en 1980.
