
Este artículo presenta y discute las hipótesis y resultados del trabajo de Acemoglu y sus colegas sobre el origen colonial del desarrollo, y revisa los principales hechos históricos de la época para mostrar los alcances y las limitaciones de su teoría con respecto a Hispanoamérica. Cuando su correlación asentamientos europeos-instituciones iniciales-instituciones actuales-desempeño actual se enmarca en el contexto de los hechos políticos, económicos y culturales de la Colonia se evidencia que es una visión simplista, parcializada y etnocéntrica del desarrollo.
