The Rio Janeiro Favelas representations in the geoweb

Abstract

While the geoweb occupies a place of increasing importance in research on digital spatial information, ithas still not been the subject of extensive studies about the role it plays in the qualificationand representation of specific territories like slums. In this paper we question how urbanmargins of Rio de Janeiro (“favelas”) are represented in the Brazilian geoweb. With theadvent of large urban programmes from 1990-2000 and the organization of “mega-events”(the Football World Cup in 2014, Olympic Games in 2016), initiatives seeking to representnew dimensions of the favelas are being multiplied. On one hand, this article examinesthe diversity of actors involved in such initiatives. On the other, it attempts to characterisethe cartographic representations and the spatial distribution conveyed by these platforms
