The article discusses the results of a questionnaire survey of students in the fourth grade, conducted to identify their readers' preferences. The characteristic of the repertoire of free reading of schoolchildren is given, preferred genres and themes of reading are distinguished, gender differences in the readers' preferences of children are described. It is established that the readers' preferences of junior schoolchildren are formed under the significant influence of the media environment and visual culture and are manifested in the choice of modern entertaining topical literature for children and adolescents in such genres as fairy tale, fantasy, adventure, detective.
