The cities in Dance, Dance, Dance of Murakami Haruki

Abstract

The privileged meeting places. In his novel, Dance Dance Dance published in 1988, Murakami Haruki describes the way of life of the city-dweller in a very sophisticated capitalist society in the 1980’s in Japan. The narrator lives in Tokyo, and makes two trips: one is to Sapporo in Hokkaidô (North), the other to Honolulu in Hawaii (South). The two cities, contrasted by their geographical and historical viewpoints, were popular tourist destinations for the Japanese, during that period. But the critical view of the narrator reveals the transformational state or process of these two cities, caused by the capitalist system. And, it is there where the narrator meets a mysterious phenomenon and finds the reasons for the mysterious disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, Kiki. The search for her is, for the hero, the turning-point of his past and the starting-point for his new life. By analyzing the passage of these travels, we demonstrate how these cities are indissociable from the theme of this novel.
