Abstract

Con el objeto de estudiar la producción de semilla de lechuga a nivel local bajo invernadero, se realizaron cuatro experimentos con las variedades Simpson 100 y Great lakes 118 para describir la floración y formación de semilla, cuantificar la producción por planta y por hectárea y evaluar, en laboratorio y en campo, la semilla producida. Los resultados muestran que es posible producir semilla de lechuga localmente y de una manera rentable con rendimientos para las variedades Simpson y Great Lakes, quealcanzan 247 y 172 Kg de semilla/ha, respectivamente. Las curvas de germinación para ambas variedades confirmaron que las semillas frescas de lechuga presentan latencia, la cual disminuye notoriamente hacia la décima semana después de cosecha. Sin embargo, cuando la semilla es sometida a5°C por 10 días, la latencia se rompe y se obtienen porcentajes de germinación del 70%. Al comparar en invernadero las semillas obtenidas localmente con las importadas u originales, se encontró que las semillas importadas estuvieron, en lo que se refiere a emergencia y peso seco, un poco por encima de las locales, pero fueron iguales en cuanto a uniformidad. Inorder to study letluce seed production locally undergreenhouse conditions, four experiments were conducted using Simpson 100and Great Lakes 118, as imported varieties. To describe flowering and seed formation, estimate seed production per plant and per hectare and to evaluate inIhe laboratoryand in the field the locally produced seed. Results show clearly that it is possible to produce lettuce seedlocally under greenhouse conditions, getting yields as high as 247 and 172 Kg/ha for Simpson and Great Lakes, respectively. Germination data for bolh varieties provedthat fresh letluce seeds aredormant, but it decreases notoriously to the tenlh week after harvest. However, when the seed is treated for 10 days with 5°C, the dormancy is broken and thegermination increases. When both seed types (local and imported) were compared under greenhouse conditions, it was found that the imported seed was slightly superior to the locally produced one with respect to emergence and seedlings dry weight, bul theywere uniform independentlyofvarietyand origin.
