Abstract

The ethnic material contained in documental sources of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries referring to the “taffies”, “amaichas”, “anfamas”, and “siambones” of the jurisdiction of San Miguel de Tucumán is analyzed. Due to the lack of information produced by the Indians themselves in the Gobernación de Tucumán, the conqueror’s representations of native reality are examined, mainly because the ethnic boundaries and identities were “built” by the Spaniards themselves in order to increase the aboriginal labor force in their own productive units. However, the messages left behind as well as the “readings” done by the Europeans would express images constructed in relation to the differences they saw and to the situations of social change they were going through. The omissions and references had a valuing character, and it is precisely through them that a particular ethnic structure can be proposed.
