Estrategias para mejorar la viabilidad, fertilidad y prolificidad de los espermatozoides criopreservados de porcino

Abstract

Desde que en 1970 se obtuvieran las primeras camadas con espermatozoides criopreservados en la especie porcina, las investigaciones que se desarrollaron posteriormente no han conseguido que los espermatozoides criopreservados se utilicen de forma cotidiana y con éxito en los programas de inseminación artificial en granjas comerciales. En los últimos años, gracias a un cambio en la estrategia científica, al abandonar las tradicionales investigaciones basadas en aspectos empíricos y tomar como punto de partida los cambios que experimentan los espermatozoides de porcino durante los procesos de congelación, descongelación y posterior transporte en el tracto reproductor de la cerda, se ha conseguido mejorar los resultados de fertilidad y prolificidad y así relanzar las posibilidades productivas y económicas de los espermatozoides criopreservados de porcino en los programas comerciales de inseminación artificial. Todo ello gracias a que se han optimizado los programas de criopreservación, mejorando la viabilidad de los espermatozoides descongelados, y se ha posibilitado que un número suficiente de espermatozoides, con su capacidad fecundante intacta, alcance el oviducto en el momento de la ovulación.
