
El artículo propone una aproximación a la figura del periodista y realizador Mateo Santos Cantero (Villanueva de los Infantes, 1891 – México D.F., 1964), centrada específicamente en sus inicios como “hombre de letras” en la conflictiva Barcelona de la Gran Guerra europea y la inmediata posguerra. Una etapa poco conocida y sin embargo fundamental para comprender la emergencia de algunas de las principales constantes discursivas de quien desempeñaría un papel fundamental en el desarrollo del periodismo y la crítica cinematográfica en la España anterior a la guerra civil, así como también en la introducción del cine en el mundo cultural libertario durante la II República.
This article proposes a descriptive and interpretative approach to the journalist and filmmaker Mateo Santos Cantero (Villanueva de los Infantes, 1891 – México DF, 1964), which is specifically focused on the beginnings of his career as a “man of letters” in Barcelona during the First World War years. A period little known yet, but essential to understand the unique journalistic idiosyncrasies of who would play a key role in the development of an early film culture in the pre Spanish Civil War, as well as the pioneering introduction of the cinema in the anarchist movement during the Second Republic.
