Abstract

Gentrification, the process by which some deteriorated low-class neighborhoods develop urbanistically and economically, has as its negative side the replacement of the original population, who as a result of the increase in prices moves out, by other citizens with a higher purchasing power. So, the original citizens cannot enjoy the benefits of this development. The tourism sector is one of the economic activities that most helps socioeconomic development in different territories, either at the state level or at the local level. The planning and management of the activity will depend on whether these tourist flows become a socioeconomic development of the local population, or on the contrary, a feeling of tourismphobia and processes of touristification, that is, the abandonment of the neighborhood by the original population, but in this case being replaced by tourist infrastructures and not by other citizens. With the study of different socioeconomic variables at neighborhood level in the city of Barcelona, as well as in the tourism sector, the aim is to analyze how they evolve and how each of these influences the processes of gentrification and touristification, through their visualization on an interactive map. In addition, an attempt will be made to find a measure that can be used to detect the threshold where tourist activity ceases to be beneficial for the community and leads to tourismphobia or even touristification.
