Debemur morti nos nostraque: el legado de la teoría literaria romana

Abstract

De sus cenizas ha renacido en infinidad de ocasiones a lo largo de los siglos la tradición cultural griega, y en particular, la latina. De hecho, pocas obras han tenido tanta repercusión en la historia de la literatura europea como la Poética de Horacio, si exceptuamos la de Aristóteles. Nunca está de más, por esta razón, recordar qué ideas, qué conceptos teóricos se fraguaron en dicha tradición y reivindicar la vigencia de la teoría literaria romana en infinidad de aspectos del pensamiento literario occidental. Conceptos como el de inspiración, verosimilitudy decoro, las figuras retóricas, las teorías sobre los géneros literarios, etc.,proceden de la Poética de Horacio, de la Institutio oratoria de Quintiliano, de los textos ciceronianos. Los hechos de los mortales perecen, que diría Horacio, pero las palabras quedan, de eso no hay duda: […] mortalia facta peribunt, nedum sermonun stet honos et gratia uiuax.
