Ring finger injuries are not as rare as someone might think, these injuries can be serious and with extremely unfortunate consequences. These preventable injuries can range from finger trauma, uncomplicated finger dislocation, finger avulsion injuries, fracture of finger bone to finger amputation. In this report we will present a case of fracturing and dislocating a finger due to wearing of a ring, and share the clinical presentation and management of the injury. We plan doing this by presenting a case and visually showing the grave consequence these injuries can have on a person if inappropriately treated and managed, and by presenting the different obstacle we are presented with in treating and managing these types of injuries. Luckily for the person in our case the prompt and appropriate management of his injury ; which occurred during a football match in which he was goalkeeping, a weak ball hit the left hand on which he was wearing his wedding ring and in this way, caused proximal interphalangeal joint dorsal dislocation and stable fracture as seen on x- ray radiological examination (anteroposterior, and lateral views) resulting from a jamming type injury or proximal interphalangeal joint hyperextension, resulted in full recovery of the finger function using only conventional treatment with strong extension block casting. In conclusion ; General medicine and emergency department doctors can treat most finger fractures and dislocations, but when necessary, prompt referral to an orthopedic or hand surgeon is important to maximize future function of the hand and finger.
