The research project concerns whole genome sequencing (WGS) of species of the genus Microsania (subfamily Microsaniine), the smoke-flies (röksvampflugor). The Microsaniinae belong to the flat-footed flies (Diptera: Platypezidae, plattfotsflugor eller svampflugor), and their larval biology remains unknown. WGS of smoke-fly samples will be used to unravel their larval biology by producing taxonomic identifications of unmapped genomic reads. The preferred habitat can be deduced if e.g. traces of host fungi in the digestive tract ingested by the larvae can be idenfied. The host fungus / host fungus group identified using the obtained genomic information will be searched for in the known habitats.
