Identity is linked to tangible and intangible heritage and historical narratives associated with that heritage. In a European population with ever-increasing diversity, cultural differences can resonate strongly regarding individuals' sensitivities about inclusivity and identity. As recent protests over historical monuments and symbols of heritage illustrate, these emotional histories can play out in public space and can divide communities fueling intolerance, discrimination and conflict. The emotive power of these sites offers a unique and increasingly relevant learning opportunity that can enable students to understand more about European heritage and values of inclusion and diversity, tolerance and respect for human rights. However, different cultural backgrounds among educators and students often make it challenging to address sensitive subjects tied to colonialism, fascism, communism, imperialism, mass violence and other legacies in the classroom. This project is designed to build a more resilient and inclusive education. To engage different actors (teachers of history, civics, heritage and related subjects, teacher-trainers, researchers, and other stakeholders) in developing and testing innovative teaching tools through the lens of monuments and sites of remembrance that examine complex and difficult shared European histories. The tools are based on knowledge sharing, including teaching strategies, lesson plans, and multimedia resources aligned in their local educational contexts and can be replicated in other environments. Our consortium of cooperating institutions aims to achieve this by preparing existing case studies adapted to be used in the classroom, literature review and research; preparing and piloting model lesson plans and innovative multimedia learning activities, capacity building of educators and webinars that focus on aspects of challenges of European historical heritage and identity in ways that promote inclusivity, tolerance and diversity.
