Fostering student engagement in STEM through eSports games in Minecraft – Mine Game

Description

<< Objectives >>Mine Game aims to enhance student engagement in STEM-oriented learning by utilizing their affinity for video games. By creating a sport game with STEM-themed sports tactics which cultivate scientific thinking Mine Game will provide educators with an engaging way to increase the interest of kids aged 8 to 12 in STEM. The objective is to reduce STEM dropout rates, especially by children at risk and girls. The Minecraft 3D gaming environment will provide the medium to deliver the sport challenges.<< Implementation >>- Elaborate methods for delivering STEM-themed sport games- Transcribe the methods to specifications for Minecraft- Create a handbook providing a hands on approach to STEM-themed eSports games- Conceptualise the game story- Create scenarios based on eSports challenges which encapsulate STEM related tactics- Design resources- Create the game levels and the map- Develop the game- Prepare instructional material and a guide- Pilot and improve the game- Launch the Mine Game package<< Results >>Main results comprise:- A handbook for creating sports games in Minecraft which deliver challenges based on sports tactics which are associated to STEM concepts- The Mine Game eSports challenges designed to cultivate scientific thinking- A guide for the set up and operation of eSports clubs based on the Mine Game offeringAs main outcome we envisage that kids (8 to 12) playing Mine Game will show a noticeable reduction in STEM dropout rate of kids, especially by kids at risk and girls.
